Purpose

There is a reason we are in this world. We all are unique. We all are here to contribute something. At the end of your life, when you are are gone, 6 feet under, what are you going to say you left behind? This is a question I ask myself a lot.

Some people make money, yes, but they do so by scamming people. If they were to go tomorrow, the world would be a better place without them.

Some are comedians, great comedians. The thought of them not being in this world makes me cringe.

Others are retired actors, retired wrestlers, like Stone Cold. He gave us the best of his life, for those who are WWE fans.

There is this short story I wanted to share with you, and I hope from it, you will be able to learn your purpose.

Kinyua is a young guy. He just finished high school. He didn’t go to campus since he didn’t get good grades.

He is a kind man. If everything was to go his way, he would be the Mother Teresa’s of the world. He doesn’t know his purpose in life and therefore he gets a girl and comes with stay with her.

She gets pregnant but Kinyua is still confused. He knows that there could be something more.

Most of his time, he spends on watching football. He is a big fan of Arsenal. But is this his purpose? Is his purpose watching football? Certainly not.

He goes on a journey to find his purpose. He reads and learns from a friend mentor who lived with him in the same village. Xuma takes his time to explain to Kinyua what purpose is and how to find your purpose.

“I will help you learn your purpose in the next 5 minutes.” Xuma tells Kinyua.

He then goes on to tell him. It all boils down to 5 questions. Who you are, what you do, who you do it for, what those people want and need, and how they change as a result.

For the first question, he tells him, it is your name. Say your name, he said John Kinyua. “Fabulous” he said. That is who you are.

Now, what do you do? What do you love to do? Do you love to write, cook, design, create iOS apps, write code, talk, teach? What do you love to do?

Kinyua took a moment. He then said he loves to pilot drones. There was a time he was helping out a graphics designer to capture wedding and event videos.

Xuma was pleased with the response. He then continued. Good work. Now focus on that which you can be able to teach other people if you were to be woken up from sleep.

Xuma was determined to make it more clearer to him.

Now, think about who you do it for. Picture them in your mind. Where are they and how can you get to them?

Kinyua vividly pictured the people he was going to serve with the drones. It vividly appeared like a daydream. He could even see himself piloting the drones freely.

“With that, you have answered the who you do it for.” Xuma said.

The next question is what do all those people want or need? What do they want or need that you have, that they come to you so you can give them this thing. What do they need. By this time, Kinyua was getting the hang of it. All his answers were not written in his imaginary book in his head.

“How do they change? How do they change or transform as a result of what you give them?”

“They will be able to have good memories from the drone videos that I capture for them.”

“Perfect.” By this time, Xuma and Kinyua were on the same page.

That formulation forces you to be outward facing. And all the happy people in life are outward facing. They are not inward facing. They knew very clearly whom they served, what those people needed, and how those people changed as a result.

The most successful people in any field always focus most on the people that they serve than on how they are served themselves.

Happier people make it a point to make other people happy, and do things that make them feel well taken care of and secure. If you make other people happy, life teaches us, we will be taken care of, too.
